Runaway was built by the Jarvis Newman Boatyard in Southwest Harbor, Maine and finished by Jim Rockefeller of Bald Mountain Boatworks in Camden, Maine, in 1972 with lovely proportions and craftsmanship. For most of her life she has sailed the Maine Coast with a few excursions south. Her low hour gas engines provide a quiet ride and good maneuverability. Her current owners have done a significant refit of not only paint and varnish, but also steering, rudders, stuffing boxes, bilge pumps, etc. Runaway offers a terrific layout for cruising and day trips, spacious interior and outside space. Overview

 

Construction

Solid fiberglass hull built by the Jarvis Newman Boatyard of Southwest Harbor, Maine.  Molded-in quarter guards, skeg, and deck shelf.  Runaway was completed by Bald Mountain Boatworks in Camden, Maine for an experienced yachtsman.  Ken Smith (early designer of the Grand Banks) designed the superstructure and layout. Very high quality woodwork went into the construction of this vessel. Solid teak decks, cockpit sole, shelter, and cabin sole. Complete interior sanded, prepped & painted, including locker interiors and bilges, except engines.Varnished mahogany interior trim, white bulkheads, and green interior cushions.  

The cabin and shelter tops are fiberglass over marine plywood with recent paint. Teak exterior was sanded and painted, trim recently finished with Cetol with a varnished teak stern seat and flybridge bench seating.  Her hull is awlgripped dark green, bottom paint is black with white boot stripe.

Engines

Twin 2002 454 PCM (Pleasure Craft Marine) V8 gas engines, 380 HP each.  2:1 BW gears, 1 1/2" SS shafts swinging 20x18x4 props.  2-lever Morse controls. Full engine panels up and down. FWC via heat exchangers (port exchanger rebuilt 2022). Dual exhaust with mufflers. New manifolds and risers, 2016. 2023: new distributor caps, rotors, fuel pumps, filters, and spark plugs.  Good access to all machinery through hatches. Engine hours are 395 and 397.

Fuel:  285-gallon capacity as follows:

                Two 55-gal. Monel tanks in aft cockpit, port and starboard in good condition

                100-gal. SS tank and 75-gal. aluminum tank, both emptied of old gas 2023

Water:  50-gal. SS tank

Holding: 15-gal. plastic tank

In 2021, a new Xintex fume sensor and alarm installed.

 

Electrical

Two size 31 deep cycle batteries, 2021. Master Switches and large electrical panel. Inverter, battery charger, and shore power. Navigational lights, cabin lights, and reading lights. Rokk mounts for Ipad and Rokk USB charging ports, Iphone installed,
Accommodations
Runaway sleeps 4 in 2 cabins. Aft of rope locker are two vee berths with filler piece. Lockers below and shelves outboard, cabintop hatch (rebuilt with new Lexan, 2021).

Next aft to port is the galley area with a Shipmate stove and oven (refurbished 2022, with new LPG sensor for Xintex, and new fiberglass Viking LPG tank), 12v refrigerator with freezer below counter, SS sink with hot and cold water. Formica counter top, lockers below, and outboard shelves.  To starboard is a built-in chest of drawers followed by a hanging locker.

Next is the enclosed head with hand-held shower, SS sink, and Wilcox toilet with Y-valve and holding tank--all extensively refurbished (toilet and tank removed, cleaned and reinstalled after room was re-painted and shower pumps cleaned & rewired, 2022). Cabin has 6'2" headroom, 6 opening bronze ports. Newly painted white bulkheads and ceiling with varnished mahogany trim. A light and airy cabin.

Up three steps to 8 1/2' L x 6'10" wide pilothouse. Helm is to starboard with portable helmsman chair. To port is a cushioned settee that pulls out to make a double berth. Ample storage lockers on both sides.

Through centerline canvas door to 8 1/2' L x 7 1/2' wide cockpit with teak sole and 3 hatches, teak stern seat followed by teak swim platform. Teak ladder to flybridge that offers a centerline helm with electronics, full width teak seat with two aft port and starboard bench seats.  New clear plastic windshield, 2022. On deck, SS rails from aft pilothouse around bow.  Teak bow pulpit for anchor with windlass.

The current owners have made many upgrades in the past two years. All exterior and interior surfaces have been recently sanded, prepped, and treated with varnish, Cetol or paint--lockers and drawers included.

2021-2023 Refit Specifics

The current owners have responsibly inspected and made the following upgrades during their ownership from 2021 - 2023:
Prior to 2021 launch:

New Xintex gas fuel sensor and alarm installed

Engine room fire extinguisher hydrotested, recharged and tagged

Two new size 31 deep-cycle batteries installed
2021-22 refit:

Addressed mast and boom sanded and varnished, standing & running rigging, metalwork, mounts, step, wiring, electronics.

Removed all contents, including electronics, furniture, mounted fixtures and removable brightwork to clean, repair as necessary, sand and refinish with varnish, Cetol or paint.

Forward hatch rebuilt with new Lexan. New Lexan also fitted and installed on fly bridge.

Rudders and steering gear:

Both exhaust stems partially removed for access. New hoses and clamps installed as needed.

Steering gear dismantled and rudder removed. Shafts cleaned.

All bronze steering parts cleaned.

Lower rudder bearing thru-hull bolts replaced with new stainless steel plate and fastenings.

Hydrosteer ram replaced.

New shaft packing and lubricated, port and starboard.

Power steering pump, belt, and 2 steering positions inspected and one hose replaced along with hydraulic fluid changed.

Propeller shaft struts, logs, hoses and packing replaced as needed. Shaft couplings replaced. Cutlass bearings inspected, Spurs removed, serviced and reinstalled.

Engine thru-hulls: removed, inspected, greased and reinstalled

Head inlet thru-hull: replaced. Head outlet, removed, greased & replaced with new bolts.

All above and below waterline thru-hull hoses checked and double clamped.

Bilge pumps: New Main Rule 2000 gph. New wiring for forward and shower pumps, hoses good. Emergency back-up new 4000 gph pump and hose.

Engines: Port engine heat exchanger rebuilt.

Plumbing: Head and holding tank removed and refurbished.

LPG and stove:  New solenoid and wiring. New f/g Viking LPG tank. New LPG sensor for Xintex.

New Electronics: VHF, USB charging ports, Mounts for Ipad with Navionics and Iphone.

 
2023:

Tanks and hoses look good. Two exterior tanks in use and without issues.

Two center tanks have not been used, old gas removed, tanks inspected, and will be filled this summer.

Raymarine speed and depth at both helm stations, lower needs adjustment.
