  9. COMMENTS & HISTORY

As with so many classic yachts, the history of IDUNA is a legacy of great and positive times followed by difficult periods of neglect and abandon. Built by the yard that was to become synonymous with the pinnacle of Dutch yacht building, the De Vries yard in Aalsmeer, later known as Feadship, she as also designed by Henri de Voogt, father to Frits de Voogt, one of the founders of Feadship. Henri was responsible for many successful racing yachts in the ‘20’s, as well as designing many larger yachts for nobility and royalty.

After a turbulent time during World War II, she was sold to a Portuguese nobleman who transformed her in 1960 from a gaff ketch to her current Marconi rig. After passing through several European hands, she found herself in a piteous state in Antibes, South of France, in the ‘90s. Rescued in the last year of the millennium by a Dutch lover of all things old and beautiful, she finally got the attention she so badly needed at a purpose built yard in Viareggio, Italy. Not realizing the extent of the degradation, the rebuild turned into an award-winning major several year long project, one that that the same team followed with another ground breaking project, the restoration of the gaff cutter LULWORTH. Further details of IDUNA’s rebuild can be provided on request.

IDUNA is now a superbly comfortable and charming example of sympathetic updating and upgrading, providing a future owner with all that is best in the marriage between traditional Dutch shipbuilding, and careful modernization. Tasteful use of Mahogany and Cherrywood for the interior, married with fine fabrics on the furniture guarantee charm and comfort in equal measure. Recent upgrades to the living spaces are almost invisible to the observer, so carefully planned and well-executed they are. The separation of the living areas means that different groups of guests can move freely between the forward dining table, the lounging area just aft of the superb doghouse , and right aft a sunny deckchair spot near the helm. The doghouse is a masterpiece of light and comfort, to either keep warm on chilly evenings, or cool during hot days with the air-conditioning on. Down below are further areas for relaxing, or just to sit and contemplate the extensive wine-cellar. The crew have their own spaces forward, including a crew mess, so can keep out of the way when necessary.

Following a recent 2022 refit which included a new main mast, new standing rigging, new paint and antifouling, as well as a thorough overhaul of the technical systems, IDUNA is now in great shape to take on a new custodian. Her current Dutch owner of many years has been responsible for taking excellent care of his charge, and tastefully improving her for modern use, all in keeping with both the original elements and also those added so successfully in the rebuild started in 1999.
