The prestigious German shipyard Lürssen has officially launched the 114.2-metre Project Cosmos, marking a defining moment in its history. This extraordinary vessel is not only one of the largest superyachts ever built by the yard, but it is also the first in their fleet to feature advanced fuel-cell propulsion. Project Cosmos represents a bold leap forward in the integration of sustainable technologies into large-scale luxury yachting.
Project Cosmos is styled inside and out by acclaimed designer Marc Newson, whose signature approach blends futuristic elegance with practical innovation. The exterior showcases flowing lines, expansive black glazing, and a distinctive rounded glass observation pod at the bow. A spacious foredeck houses a helipad, while the sweeping aft deck features a swimming pool and a unique cut-out section that can host a large tender or other watercraft.

Built with a robust steel hull and superstructure, Project Cosmos measures 18 metres across the beam and delivers approximately 6,300 GT of interior volume. This immense size allows for generous open deck spaces, voluminous interior layouts, and state-of-the-art amenities, all crafted with the meticulous attention to detail for which Lürssen is celebrated. The yacht’s uncluttered lines and sleek form are matched by the structural strength needed for long-range voyages.
At the heart of Project Cosmos is a methanol-powered fuel-cell system — a pioneering advancement in superyacht engineering. This system enables the yacht to operate with zero emissions while at anchor for up to 15 days or cruise slowly for around 1,000 nautical miles. The setup integrates stacks of fuel cells formed from bipolar plates and membrane electrode assemblies, supported by a maritime-compliant methanol supply and ventilation system, delivering efficiency with minimal maintenance.
Project Cosmos demonstrates that environmental responsibility and opulence can coexist. The fuel-cell technology significantly reduces the yacht’s carbon footprint while maintaining the comfort and performance expected from a vessel of this class. The ability to anchor in pristine environments without polluting emissions is a defining feature for owners who value both adventure and conservation.
First seen emerging from the shed in March 2023, Project Cosmos has since undergone extensive outfitting at Lürssen’s Kiel and Rendsburg facilities. Every stage of construction reflected a commitment to precision, innovation, and craftsmanship. Now launched, she is set to redefine industry standards for both sustainability and luxury on the open ocean.
The launch of Project Cosmos solidifies Lürssen’s position as a leader in forward-thinking yacht construction. By merging fuel-cell propulsion with exceptional design, the shipyard has created a vessel that is both a technological marvel and a work of art. Project Cosmos is not just a yacht — it is a vision of the future of yachting, offering a blueprint for sustainable luxury at sea.
Lürssen launches the 114m Project Cosmos, the first fuel-cell superyacht in its fleet. A groundbreaking step in sustainable yachting technology and design.
